Truffles

Here are some varieties of truffles which are very much popular: Oregon white truffle this truffle is firm and could even be brittle. It is white when still young and would develop an orange-brown color as it matures. Oregon brown truffle- it is reddish-brown on the outside, and sort of grey in the inside. What is harvested is the fruit, the roots are white filaments called as hyphas, and there is not stem. Truffles would suck sap from the host plant or trees. Those truffles that grow under the roots of oak trees are the most pungent, while those that grow in the roots of lime trees are the most aromatic. There are also other types of Chinese Truffles including the tuber melanosporum which are usually made into truffle extracts and is sold at a high price; the tuber himalayensis which looks very similar to the tuber melanosporum an is only harvested in the Chinese Himalayas; the tuber sinensis, which are also found in high places and the Chinese summer white truffle. It is interesting to note, though, that such a power in fact has no scientific basis. There is no solid evidence yet that proves the claim that truffles have the ability to stimulate sexual drive in humans, let alone animals. Despite that lack of proof of the truffles mystical power, their smell makes you want to inhale it over and over. Oregon Black Truffles Larger and less popular than Oregon white truffles, the Oregon blacks emit a strong earthy smell when they are mature. Their exterior and interior are both dark colored. They appear like rough lumps of coal with a texture of ground almonds and moist Parmesan. 8. Oregon Brown Truffles Cultivated in Douglas-fir forests, Oregon brown truffles have a gray meat and reddish brown outer covering. Not only does it make you pay less for a lighter pack of truffles, but it also allows you to see what you are actually buying. Check the truffles for softness and firmness. Truffles with soft spots tend to have worms in them. Avoid buying such truffles. Also, don t buy truffles that are rubbery, slimy, or spongy.
